Overview
Interfacing liquid chromatography to a tandem mass spectrometer allows LC-MS/MS experiments to be carried out. This involves not just mass measurements of analytes contained in a complex mixture but also measurement of the mass of the fragments that the analytes decompose into.

The fragments produced by a compound after decomposition are often diagnostic of its identity and the technique can therefore be used for routine identification purposes, as well as for quantification. However, it can also be used for investigative research purposes, particularly in the bio-science arena.

LC-MS/MS is a technique that is integral to several other key areas of science, including forensic science, clinical chemistry applications and monitoring drug uptake, metabolism and excretion.
